- Consider any USB device you might plug into a computer today such as a hard drive or a game controller or a Wi-Fi adapter. In the case of the hard drive, when you plug that into your computer, the computer's operating system (modern ones starting after Windows 95/98) already knows how to deal with a USB-attached hard drive.

I don't think you want to do this to be honest with you. Your best bet with Time Capsule is always have it as your main base station or router. If you don't and then you attempt to use it for Time Machine backups you will run into a lot of backup errors and it may not work the way you want it to.
To be honest with you there isn't much involved in replacing an existing router with a Time Capsule or Airport Extreme/Express. During the setup it actually will ask you if you are replacing another router, it will look for your existing network setting that are already saved in your keychain and then put those settings on your Time Capsule. To be honest, you'll probably be happy you did it since the Time Capsule also happens to be one of the best routers on the market. But up to you.
Just an FYI.
